General Statement of Duties:

The R&D Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing the mechanical engineering team to develop innovative oilfield tools and systems. Reporting directly to the Vice-President of Engineering, this position is crucial for guiding projects from concept through to commercialization, ensuring designs meet technical, operational, and financial objectives. The R&D Engineering Manager will also be responsible for mentoring junior engineers, managing cross-functional collaboration, and driving the adoption of new technologies to maintain Kobold’s competitive edge.

Required Skills / Expertise:

Summary of duties (duties may include, but are not limited to the following):

Lead the conceptualization, research, and development of new downhole tools and hydraulic fracturing and completions equipment, ensuring designs meet both technical requirements and customer needs.

Provide strategic direction and mentorship to engineers, fostering professional growth and promoting a collaborative and innovative team environment.

Oversee all aspects of project management, including scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation, to ensure the timely and successful completion of projects.

Manage the development of high-quality 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, and structured BOMs using SolidWorks, ensuring designs are ready for production and meet industry standards.

Facilitate communication and collaboration between engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams to ensure smooth transitions from design to production.

Conduct risk assessments and oversee the development of testing plans, including shop and field tests, to validate designs.

Research and evaluate new technologies and materials to drive innovation, improve product performance, and maintain market competitiveness.

Ensure thorough documentation of all design work, from initial concepts to final production, ensuring compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Strong expertise in SolidWorks and FEA, with the ability to manage complex designs and simulations.

Proven experience in mechanical engineering principles and project management, with a track record of leading successful R&D projects.

Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to break down complex challenges and generate multiple potential solutions.

Hands-on experience in shop testing, with a practical approach to validating designs through real-world trials.

Strong leadership, communication, and time management skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams and departments.

Thorough knowledge of industry materials and manufacturing methods, with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation.

 Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

Minimum of 10 years of mechanical engineering experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation in Alberta.

Significant experience in oil and gas industry equipment, particularly related to downhole tools and hydraulic fracturing and completions systems.

Experience with managing multiple projects and meeting tight deadlines while maintaining high-quality output.
