Objective & Overview

  • The Senior Income Tax Analyst role forms part of the North American Tax team and is located in Mississauga, Ontario.
  • The incumbent will be responsible to ensure that all legislative compliance and management reporting requirements are met.
  • This role will be primarily responsible for the preparation of the Canadian tax provisions, tax returns and will also provide tax information for financial statement reporting.
  • The Senior Income Tax Analyst will also support the Income Tax Manager in carrying out the R&D claims, retaining contemporaneous documentation for transfer pricing transactions as well as ad hoc projects.

Responsibilities

Health & Safety:  

  • Communicating, improving and adhering to health & safety policies in all work environments.

Tax Returns and other filings:  

  • Prepare and analyze Lafarge Canada Inc.’s tax returns including T106’s and respective annual true-ups. Perform reviews when necessary of Lafarge Canada Inc.’s subsidiaries tax returns and annual true-ups. Also responsible for the review and/or preparation of the withholding tax payments, NR4 filings and T1135s. Support the financial statement compilation process for tax return purposes as well as supporting the note disclosure in the audited statutory financial statements. This position will also support the Income Tax Manager in carrying out the R&D claims and retaining contemporaneous documentation for transfer pricing transactions.

Tax Reporting:  

  • Participate in the preparation and analysis of Lafarge Canada Inc.’s quarterly, hard-close and year-end consolidated tax provisions. Prepare and analyze Lafarge Canada Inc.’s subsidiaries group of companies quarterly, hard-close and year-end consolidated tax provisions. This role will be responsible for the Cash Tax reporting as well as the maintenance of the monthly Tax Accounts reconciliations. 

Internal and External (including Tax Authorities) Audits:

  • Assist the Income Tax Manager in gathering information and drafting responses to tax authorities’ queries as well as external auditor’s queries for designated companies. Maintain appropriate documentation to support all tax positions, accounting entries, assessments/audit information etc. Lead the process of supporting internal as well as external audit reporting requirements.

Ad Hoc Requirements:  

  • Working on special projects such as amalgamations or wind-ups of legal entities. Liaise with other teams for process improvements such as audit support documentation. Work cohesively within the tax team to continuously improve processes. Understand the federal and provincial income tax legislation and regulations and assist in implementing any required changes to tax processes.

Relationship with Others:

  • Close interaction with Business Units, Regional Finance Staff and ABS (shared business services)
  • Close interaction with other members of the tax team.
  • Able to work as a member of diverse teams including members from different functional areas such as treasury, accounting & finance, legal and various locations and time zones. 
  • Interaction with external financial auditors as well as tax authorities 

Dimensions:

  • This position reports to the Income Tax Manager, Canada who in turn reports to the Director of Taxes, Canada


Position Requirements (Experience, Technical Expertise):

  • Timely delivery of tax returns and tax provisions with minimal errors detected on review or subsequent audit
  • Maintenance of files with appropriate documentation to support all tax positions, accounting entries, assessments/audit information etc.
  • Contribute towards the tax team’s KPIs such as cash taxes and ETR measurements
  • Keep current on relevant federal, provincial and foreign statutory/regulatory and/or technology changes to identify and implement necessary changes and best practices
  • Demonstrate an understanding of accounting principles and excellent knowledge of tax legislation.
  • Initiative is a key attribute to recognizing problems/issues and proposing appropriate resolutions 
  • Knowledge and understanding of business operational concepts
  • Knowledge of accounting and tax within the manufacturing and/or construction industry would be an asset
  • Maintain personal and corporate integrity in all actions
  • Awareness of internal controls providing reasonable assurance of effective and efficient operations, including actions to prevent and detect fraud and protect Company resources


Qualification Profile

Education & Experience: 

  • Undergraduate degree required in accounting, business, commerce or equivalent experience
  • Professional accounting designation required (CA, CMA, CGA or CPA)
  • A minimum of 2-4 years of large corporation accounting exposure
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in Tax. 
  • Previous work in a similar industry would be an asset
  • Master degree or CICA in-depth tax course completion or in progress.


Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong proficiency with MS Word, Excel (Pivot Tables and V-Lookups) and Taxprep software.
  • Experience with online tax research tools, materials.
  • Familiarity with different tax software packages including databases and SAP an asset
  • Excellent knowledge of the tax legislation and accounting principles
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to adapt quickly to change
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills as well as presentation skills
