Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Manager, Equipment, the Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing Maintenance Operations and equipment on all projects ensuring the equipment is maintained to the highest standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with management of all aspects of the maintenance hub and spoke sites across the country (AB, BC, SK, MB etc.) in accordance with each region’s business plan and budget.
  • Ensure the proper maintenance and repair of equipment at all sites by managing fleet maintenance activities.
  • Communicate regularly with all supervisors, planners and parts personnel to insure optimal maintenance hub activity.
  • Makes recommendations for changes in staffing as necessary to meet demands of workload; interviews applicants and makes recommendations for hire; assesses training needs, develops training programs, and trains new and existing staff in various aspects of fleet operations, repair, and maintenance; counsels employees and recommends corrective and/or disciplinary action when appropriate; and documents employee performance and maintains employee records.
  • Ensures adherence to all laws, regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines affecting areas of responsibility.
  • Actively support the management team in maintaining safety programs and safety attest.
  • Responsible for the safety compliance of the repair and maintenance team for Tail Gate, Work site inspections and any Safety System Requirements.
  • Provides leadership to maintenance staff and fosters a collaborative climate.
  • Manage the coordination of both company owned vehicles and equipment and third party vehicle and equipment rentals.
  • Monitor developing trends and innovation regarding equipment and rolling stock maintenance activities.
  • Assist in forecasting replacements for HD vehicles and HD equipment.
  • Accurate and timely coding of all invoices and timesheets.
  • Proper and efficient tracking and processing of new machine warranty.
  • Capable of managing the companies lubricant analysis program.
  • Assist in spec’ing of new equipment.
  • Assist in spec’ing of new equipment warranty packages.
  • Communicating with clients, support staff and management to insure optimum everyday problem solving.
  • Supporting senior staff in developing strategic HR initiatives.
  • Assisting management in coordinating fleet utilization and disposals.
  • Managing meter reading and Vision Link compliance there by policing a timely and accurate service, preventive maintenance and repair schedule.
  • Possible assistance with KPI (Key Performance Indicators).
  • Assist with accurate tracking of all vehicles and equipment for internal billing and job costing purposes.
  • Mentor Mechanical staff and apprentices.
  • Prepares and approves requisitions for parts and supplies; and develops and implements inventory controls to minimize waste and loss.
  • Supervise Maintenance staff and facilities in the Calgary location, may act for the Fleet Manager in his/her absence.
  • Minimal travel to various locations as required. 

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

  • Must have a minimum of 8-10 years of management experience in the heavy equipment industry with shop exposure and field repair capabilities
  • Experienced and considerable knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of various types of heavy equipment and other power-driven equipment and tools
  • Skilled in the operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in the repair of heavy equipment
  • Ability to multi-task and meet objectives/deliverables
  • Ability to mentor and lead a team of trades personnel
  • Results-oriented team player with strong interpersonal skills
  • Self-starter; with ability to handle change
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to stand, climb, bend, and lift to 50lbs for extended periods
  • Strong commitment to health, safety, environment and customer service
  • Valid safety tickets: (H2S, Confined Space, Forklift, First aid, WHIMIS, TDG, and PST)
