Job Purpose:

The Lead Operator plays an integral role in leading the safe and effective day-to-day operations of the Facility, including waste treatment, oil treatment and water injection. In this role, proper supervision and training of Operators is a high priority. The Lead Operator is responsible for leading the operators in a healthy, safe, and environmentally responsible manner that is aligned with the corporate vision, mission, and values. Additionally, it is imperative that all employees are given appropriate guidance to ensure that each individual Operator and the facility is operating at a high caliber of efficiency. The Lead Operator will be in constant contact with customers and therefore must demonstrate excellent communications skills and a high level of customer service. This is a safety-sensitive role and due to the nature of working conditions, the Lead Operator is required to be mentally and physically fit to successfully perform the tasks and responsibilities of this role.

Work Environment 

This position works a standard 40 hour work-week, Monday through Friday, and will oversee our East Kaybob Pipeline System and Fox Creek Full-Service Terminal. 

A Day in The Life

The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the plant and for supervising the plant Operators
  • Plant safety (i.e. ensuring that each operation is following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and safety work procedures, Standard Work Procedure (SWP) permitting, Hazard Assessments and iTrak items are entered and closed in a timely manner)
  • Ensure compliance to SECURE’s internal Governance Programs
  • Assigning roles to each Operator on shift and supervising each Operator’s area in the plant
  • Waste plant operation (ensuring solids processing is meeting or exceeding landfill criteria and solids testing)
  • General housekeeping (ensuring that the plant is kept clean and safe)
  • Training (ensuring each Operator is training in required areas, should be daily/ongoing)
  • Night shift (ensuring workers on night shift are clear in their roles and responsibilities for business continuity and support to daytime operations
  • Ensure proper facility utilization and optimization principles are being followed.
  • Willingness to undertake project-based travel with the expectation of relocating to project sites as needed.

Skills, Experience, & Qualifications

The individual in this role will have:

  • Current status level must be Operator 1 Advanced or greater
  • A High School Diploma, General Education Diploma or equivalent
  • A valid and acceptable Driver’s license and successful completion of Pre-employment testing
  • Has spent a minimum of 5 years as an Operator in a Centrifuge process or FST plant and is highly experienced in all processes of the plant
  • A minimum of 3 years operations experience in waste processing  
  • Experience or training in handling NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) impacted waste would be considered an asset.
  • NORM awareness training or equivalent certification would be considered an asset.
  • Understanding of safety protocols and procedures related to NORM waste management would be considered an asset.
  • Special training in boilers, centrifuges, pumps (all), repairs, shaker/centrifuge and loader is considered an asset
  • Must enroll and complete mandatory internal leadership courses.
  • Current and valid safety tickets as per role-based training matrix.
  • A strong attention to detail, communication skills and a profound ability to work long hours in a mentally and physically demanding work environment
  • Must be able to document their work and ensure consistent communication with the Facility Manager, operations supervisors and cross-shift Leads clearly and accurately
  • Ability to work collaboratively with support groups in the business such as Engineering and specialist SME’s.
  • Must be able to multi-task and demonstrate good decision-making skills
  • Proven ability to work well under limited amount of supervision
  • Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills and safe work practices
  • Must demonstrate strong teaching methods regarding all processes in the plant, including safety operations, waste processing and centrifuge operations, customer reporting and data tracking
  • Must demonstrate a high level of integrity and accountability as the Lead Operator will be responsible for managing the plant in the absence of the Facility Manager
  • Ensure consistent and clear communication with the Facility Manager, Supervisor and other Leads
  • Show troubleshooting and problem-solving skills under minimal supervision while being able to communicate them in a timely manner to other stakeholders.
